Police shut down photo exhibition of naked women because they’re too ‘indecent’ for display in public square
A photo exhibition of naked women aimed at promoting positive body image in Copanhagen has been shut down by police for being too 'indecent'.
Danish nudist photographer and artist Mathilde Grafström had planned the display of her 'Female Beauty' collection for Copenhagen's Nytorv square, but police have denied her permission saying the photos are 'offensive'.
Speaking to Denmark's TV 2 she said, 'I take my photos to show young women that they are more beautiful than they think. I show the woman that she is beautiful, and that way I can help her to accept herself.'
On her website, she writes that her project 'Female Beauty' is all about combating negative self-image.
”When we don't make our self small, boring and ugly with our own thoughts, we shine naturally of beauty, life and joy.
'All humans have more beauty in them than they realize. And it can be called forward in one days time, if we are willing to work with our self and question all our negative beliefs about our self.'
The explicit photos show naked women posing in a forest, in the water and draped over rocks.
And according to Ms Grafström's website, the models aren't the only one getting their clothes off for the shoot.
'I love to shoot my models naked,' she writes.
'But sometimes it can be difficult because I also fight with my own problems; I think my hips and breasts are to small.
'Sometimes when my boyfriend are looking at my body, I think that I'm unattractive. But then I can see that it's all the negative thoughts about my body that makes me less beautiful and unfree.'
Comparing her work to photos of bare breasts featured in an advert for Denmark's Nygart plastic surgery clinic, she has complained that there is no difference.
'Nygart's breasts are plastic. My photos are an aesthetic expression. It is shocking that my pictures are obscene, while advertising is not,' she said.
